Stream Deck, Boom Arms, and Softboxes: Building a Studio on Faith and Budget

Building the PerSpeckTives studio has been equal parts exciting and humbling. Sure, I’d love to walk into a fully loaded room with top-tier gear and an endless budget. That’s not my reality—and honestly, that’s okay.

I’m learning to build with faith and strategy. Knowing the vision, my daughter gifted me a Stream Deck years ago to keep production smooth. I bought three mics but we need four, then boom arms for clean placement. I grabbed ring lights, but what we really need are softboxes—light that flatters instead of blinds. Piece by piece, the studio is taking shape.

Some people might see limits. I see promise and possibility. Every purchase is prayed through; every piece chosen for quality and budget. We’re building with intention. Each time I’ve needed direction, God has nudged me—answers I couldn’t have “reasoned out” on my own.

Here’s the truth: God doesn’t need the most expensive setup to make His voice heard. He asks us to prepare, to plan, and to create with what we have. Excellence isn’t overspending; it’s honoring what’s in your hand.

How we’re setting it up:

  • Audio first: dynamic mics, pop filters, boom arms, and headphones for monitoring.

  • Light that loves faces: swap ring lights for a softbox kit at ~45°, add a subtle rim/back light if needed.

  • Control and cues: Stream Deck for scene switching, mutes, and stingers—simple muscle memory.

  • Redundancy: record to 512 GB SD and computer; label files the same day.

  • Spend in tiers: Must-Have (audio, softboxes) → Nice-to-Have (backdrop, stands) → Later (our 5-camera plan).

  • Stewardship rhythm: pray → plan → purchase → test within return window → document settings.
